EXPERTISE:

Functional thin oxide films deposited by laser ablation (pulsed laser deposition - PLD), especially for renewable energy applications such as fuel cells and batteries.
In-situ spectroscopies during ablation and thin film deposition (plasma spectroscopies: emission and mass spectrometry).
Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) of functional materials (e.g. for sensors).
Thin film analysis by SIMS.
Applications of laser ablation ranging from fundamental studies to structuring/laser transfer, especially in the field of polymers.
Design of polymers for laser applications.
Spectroscopies (UV-Vis-NIR, IR, Raman, Raman-microscopy, TOF-MS) in connection with laser ablation, including surface analysis methods (XPS, SERS, SIMS). Surface modifications, especially of polymers, using photons (lasers and excimer lamps).

PERSONAL ACTIVITIES:

Tennis:
I WAS member of the TC Wettingen because of their great club coach, i.e. Danny Freundlieb, but this changed (not the quality of Danny as coach). Now I am member of the TC Schlieren.

Single Malt Whisky:
I am a life-time member of the whisky connoisseurs, and believe that every day comes to a perfect end with a single malt. My favorites are the islay single malts, e.g. Laphroaig, Lagavulin.
Japan:
I am a big Japan fan, spend one year as a post-doc there and had the opportunity for several visits. I love japanese food (below left), sake, onsen (below right) and sumo (I took even once part in a tournament).
Favorites:
Books: R. P. Feynman: Surely you're joking, Mr Feynman, J. R. R. Tolkien: The lord of the rings, F. Herbert: Dune, E. Hemingway: Across the river into the trees.
Movies: Abyss, Deep Blue, Lethal Weapon.
Music: Dire Straits, Phil Collins, but also Classic, Opera, and Blues.
Wine: Dry whites, i.e. Riesling from Franken (Germany), and red wines, e.g. from Italy, Switzerland and South America.
Least favourable:
Cauliflower, combination of arrogance with ignorance/stupidity, empty shells, do-nothings, lies, blow-hards.
